While convenient, secondary refrigerators and freezers are often older and less efficient than new, ENERGY STAR® certified models – with units manufactured before 1993 using twice as much energy, while models from the 70’s cost up to four times more to operate.

Help Protect the Environment

And that’s not all. Appliance recycling also helps the environment by keeping metals, refrigerants, oils, mercury, foam insulation and other contaminants out of landfills. Recycling also helps conserve natural resources. In fact, for every ton of steel that’s properly recycled – roughly the amount in 16 full-size refrigerators – we save 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone in natural resources.

If you’re a Georgia Power residential customer and have a working secondary refrigerator or freezer you want to recycle, take advantage of Georgia Power’s Refrigerator Recycling Program. We’ll pick up and recycle your old refrigerator or freezer for free – and give you $50. The refrigerator or freezer must be empty and working at the time of pickup.
